Novak Djokovic will have the chance to get his own back on Carlos Alcaraz when the US Open gets underway in New York next week. World No 1 Alcaraz took the third Grand Slam of the year last month when he defeated his Serbian rival in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon as a powershift in men’s tennis appeared to be taking place.

But Djokovic has already laid down the best marker possible by defeating the Spaniard last Sunday to win the Cincinnati Open, just a week before the final Grand Slam of the year gets underway at Flushing Meadows.

Despite the result, it’s Alcaraz who remains top of the world rankings and No 1 seed for the tournament, which Djokovic seeded at No 2, ensuring that the pair cannot face each other until the final.

The 20-year-old Spaniard is defending champion after he won the 2022 final in four sets against Casper Rudd, to clinch his maiden slam triumph.

In the women’s game Polish world No 1 Iga Swiatek will defend her title as the top seed and will be confident of repeating her double slam achievement of last year having won the French Open in 2023 already.

She won’t have it all her own way, however, and she was brought down a peg by Coco Gauff in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open with the American going on to win the tournament.
