More and more upsets are happening at the US Open now as the second round gets underway. Casper Ruud was the biggest casualty from Tuesday’s matches as the No 5 seed went down to Zhizhen Zhang.
Stefanos Tsitsipas also suffered a disappointing defeat to qualifier Dominic Stricker, which opens up Novak Djokovic’s half of the draw even more. Seeded players Chris Eubanks, Lorenzo Musetti, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Francisco Cerundolo have already been knocked out of Djokovic’s side of the draw.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion faces compatriot Laslo Djere in the next round with all eyes on a possible blockbuster quarter-final with American Taylor Fritz. Meanwhile, Britain’s contingent in the singles draw was reduced by one yesterday after Lily Miyazaki came unstuck against Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.
The rest of the pack are set to play today, including a few big ties including Andy Murray against Grigor Dimitrov. Jack Draper is also up against Hubert Hurkacz while Katie Burrage faces a difficult test against world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka.

‘Court 17 was lit’The notorious Court 17 has taken centre stage this week with players complaining about the smell of weed.
But American star Taylor Townsend had a different experience entirely in her second-round win over Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Speaking after her upset victory, Townsend said: “I kind of got the feeling like they are so passionate. It was super lit. I had a great time. I had so much fun.
“This is probably the most that I’ve gotten the crowd involved. I was fired up. Cut that. Really, I had a great time.”

Ruud blasted umpireDuring Casper Ruud’s shock defeat to Zhizhen Zhang, the No 5 seed let rip at the chair umpire for not enforcing the toilet break rule on his opponent.
Zhang took a seven-minute break in between the fourth and fifth set, which enraged Ruud as he had the momentum from drawing the match level.
The Norwegian tennis star fumed at umpire Richard Haigh after he was broken immediately at the start of the fifth set.
He shouted: “You follow the rules so clearly sometimes and other times you don’t give a st!”

Gauff tips Russian teen for bright futureMirra Andreeva was stopped in straight sets by the in-form Coco Gauff in their hotly-anticipated second round US Open clash with the American paying credit to her opponent after their clash.
The Russian teen has taken the tennis world by storm this year and enjoyed a stellar run at Wimbledon into the second week of the tournament.
Gauff prevented Andreeva going on a similar run at the US Open, but she has no doubt that the 16-year-old will be even more competitive in the coming years.
“Mirra has a great future. I was also in this position before. I hope you guys continue to support her. She will perform here many more times,” Gauff said.

‘Alcaraz a legend already’Mats Wilander has called Carlos Alcaraz a “legend already” with the Spaniard bidding to defend his US Open title from last year.
Alcaraz has looked in high spirits at Flushing Meadows this week, sporting a Rafa Nadal-esque sleeveless top and could creare history in becoming the first men’s player to defend the US Open title since Roger Federer in 2008.
Wilander has been super impressed with how Alcaraz has handled himself this week and feels the 20-year-old has already achieved legendary status.
He said: “I mean, he’s such a legend already because of the way that he acts, the way he’s on court, the way you get inspired by just watching him going about it.”

Players beating the systemUSTA chief Ben Shapiro has revealed that some players try and get creative when booking the practice courts at the US Open in a bid to avoid practicing with another player in the early stages of the tournament.
He told ESPN: “Some will say they’re injured and need to play with their coach as it wouldn’t be fair to the other player, but other times they will give a fake name or of a player who’s not here.
“I booked a court the other day for a player and someone who was still playing at the [ATP] tournament in Winston-Salem.
“They know the system and we really do just want to get everyone out there on a court, so we booked it.”

Wozniacki feeling goodCaroline Wozniacki picked up her biggest win to date since returning to the tour as she defeated No 11 seed Petra Kvitova to reached the US Open third round.
She said: “It feels amazing to beat such an amazing player and champion like Petra. Obviously I knew coming into the match that I had a chance to win, and I believe in myself. At the same time she obviously has had a great year. She’s 11 in the world, loves to play on hard courts.
“I knew it was going to be a very tough one and I had to play my best tennis. I’m just so thrilled to have an opportunity to play out on Arthur Ashe Stadium. What an honor that is, play a night session in front of this amazing crowd.”

Djokovic nasty fallWhile Novak Djokovic made light work of his second-round match, there was some concerns when the No 2 seed took a nasty tumble on the court.
The Serbian was well on his way to a comfortable win when, midway through the third set, Djokovic fell to the floor in dramatic fashion after scrambling for the ball.
He spent a short while laid on the floor as he regained his composure, but fortunately avoided any serious injury.
It does look as though only an injury will stop Djokovic reaching the final at Flushing Meadows.

Swiatek apologises to MurrayAndy Murray caught world No 1 Iga Swiatek off guard this week when the Brit named her as his preferred partner in mixed doubles.
Swiatek was humbled by Murray’s suggestion, but she felt unable to commit to Murray’s suggestion.
“I wish I could play mixed doubles, but singles for me is enough, especially with such an intense and long season,” she said.
“I will just focus on singles but I think Andy will forgive me. We’ll see, I’ll talk to him.”

Kyrgios gives sarcastic responseNick Kyrgios has taken a sarcastic dig at the big bosses in tennis over the packed schedule after Andy Roddick pointed out that “lots of players” were going down and struggling with physical issues at the US Open.
Kyrgios is not competing at Flushing Meadows this year as he continues to recover from a long-term injury.
But this year’s tournament has already seen a number of players retire early from matches, including Dominic Thiem on Wednesday.
Roddick pondered why there were players struggling at the US Open, but Kyrgios clearly feels the long tennis calendar is playing a part.
He replied: “It’s because the tennis season isn’t long enough, there aren’t enough tournaments.”
