Zoe Ball surprised by message from Stefanos TsitsipasStefanos Tsitsipas says he would happily trade in a Grand Slam title for a world No 1 ranking. The Greek superstar is among the most exciting rising stars in the sport right now and currently finds himself ranked No 5 in the world by the ATP.
Despite this, the 24-year-old is still yet to pick up a Grand Slam title – but that is not what motivates him the most. Tsitsipas wants to be known as the best in the world and values the No 1 world ranking over any of the major tournament trophies.
“I’ll trade (a Grand Slam) for being number one. It is definitely something special, it is a sign that you have reached the maximum in your career, and I like it when you are able to maximize everything,” he told Mexican publication El Universal Deportes in a recent interview.
“This way, one day I will be able to tell my grandchildren that I have been number one.” Tsitsipas reached the final of the French Open in 2021 and the Australian Open this year, only to be beaten by Novak Djokovic on both occasions.

At Roland Garros, it looked to be almost a given he would clinch his first Grand Slam title as he built up a two-set lead over the Serbian legend from the off. However, an incredible comeback from Djokovic would deny Tsitsipas victory as he recovered to force five sets and eventually defeat his adversary 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and win his second French Open title.
Tsitspias got a healthy boost in his world ranking as a result and achieved a career-high rating of No 3. As a junior, Tsitspias sat on top of the ITF rankings and he is hoping to do the same again as a senior under the watchful eye of his father and coach Apostolos Tsitsipas.

Together they are working hard to continue his rise up the rankings and have put a lot of effort into his attacking game as of late. Tsitsipas is known for his vicious forehand and the father and son duo are ensuring they play to their strengths in the lead up to the US Open next month.
Tsitspias added: “I have put a lot of effort into my attacking game, because my style is built around that and being aggressive; In addition, my serve is a great characteristic and I am working on my flexibility when it comes to making as many returns as possible on the court.”
