Adrian Newey is reportedly set to join Aston Martin for the 2026 F1 campaign and Ted Kravitz has shared two words Red Bull employees won’t want to hear. It was confirmed in May that the 65-year-old would be ending a 19-year association with the team and would be placed on gardening leave until the first quarter of 2025.

The chief designer has long been perceived to be the best in his field in F1, and his departure undoubtedly signifies a hammer blow for Christian Horner and co.

But amid much speculation over his next move, it appears that Lawrence Stroll is in pole position to secure the services of Newey in a reported three-year deal worth around £78million.

And Sky F1 reporter Ted Kravitz has now outlined the potential impact that Newey’s move could have on the sport. “I said this at the time and I’ll say it again, if you’re working in the Red Bull factory, two words you don’t want to hear: Adrian’s leaving,” he told the latest Sky F1 podcast.

“Can you imagine the impact of those words? It’s like what? Adrian’s going? Oh no. So the impact of Newey leaving and potentially going to Aston Martin, the latest hot rumour to have signed his services to be announced at the end of the summer break – we’ll see if that turns out to be true or not.”

Newey has also been linked with the likes of Ferrari, McLaren and Williams. But he’s now set for a reunion with Aston Martin technical director Dan Fallows, who left Red Bull in 2021 after 15 years.

Kravitz cited Fallows as a potential reason why Newey would want to lead Aston Martin’s charge in 2026. The team are expected to challenge that season, amid regulation changes including a revised power unit configuration and new active aerodynamics.

“I think it’s more important for the people that he’s working with, the environment he’s working under, and where he’s working,” added Kravitz. “You look at the investment that’s already happened at Aston Martin, you look at their factory, he’s already got Dan Fallows who he worked with successfully at Red Bull Racing there with him.

“He would have I imagine definitely talked about this to Dan Fallows. He would have wanted to know from Dan Fallows about what is this place that I’m coming to? What’s it like?”

The loss of Newey has capped a season of chaos at Red Bull, despite Max Verstappen leading the drivers’ standings by 78 points. The team are also 42 points ahead of McLaren in the constructors’ race.

But Jonathan Wheatley has announced he will leave his role as sporting director to become team principal of Audi. It follows reports of a power struggle between Helmut Marko and Horner, despite the latter being cleared of inappropriate behaviour towards a female employee.
