Novak Djokovic Discusses Health Issues As Alcaraz Has Excuse For US Open Loss

Day five of the US Open is already upon us and there has been no shortage of drama in New York thus far. Carlos Alcaraz was brutally dumped out by Botic van de Zandschlup overnight in one of the biggest shocks in Grand Slam history.

The young Spaniard was among the favourites to win the title but was beaten in straight sets by his unfancied Dutch opponent. Van de Zandschlup produced the best display of his career to secure a 6-1 7-5 6-4 triumph and set up a meeting with British hopeful Jack Draper.

Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, is safely through to round three after Laslo Djere withdrew from their second-round match in the final set. He was forced to retire with an injury, allowing Djokovic to progress despite blasting his own ‘awful’ serve in his post-match interview.

Naomi Osaka reflects on US Open exitNaomi Osaka spoke candidly to the media after losing to Karolina Muchova in the second round at Flushing Meadows.

She said: “It’s a little rough because I do take these losses really personally. It’s like a dramatic word, but I feel like my heart dies every time I lose.

“I’ve been trying to be more mature and learn and talk more about them. It’s been a little difficult because obviously I can only gauge how I’m doing by results.

“Like, I feel faster, I feel better, but I lost in the second round. So, it’s a little rough.”

Carlos Alcaraz makes worrying admissionCarlos Alcaraz suggested that he was ‘not well mentally’ after crashing out of the US Open.

Speaking after his surprise defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp, he said: “Instead of taking steps forward, I’ve taken steps back in terms of my head and I don’t understand why.

“Because I came from a spectacular summer, from Roland Garros, from Wimbledon, coming out of there saying that mentally I had taken a step forward, like I had realised that to win big things or Grand Slams you had to be mentally tough.

“I come to this tour and it’s like I’ve taken steps back. It’s like I’m not well mentally. I’m not well, I’m not strong.

“Among the problems I have is that I don’t know how to control myself, I don’t know how to manage it and that’s a problem for me, really.”

Elena Rybakina concerns raisedRennae Stubbs believes there is ‘something going on’ with Elena Rybakina following her surprise withdrawal from the US Open.

“There’s something obviously going on here. I don’t want to speculate, but this is a very unusual situation,” said Stubbs.

“Eight withdrawals this year, undisclosed injury now at US Open. I just think there’s something more going on here. This is not a normal situation.

“I’ve seen her over the last couple of days. She hasn’t looked great. I’ve seen her for years on the tour. I know what she looks like when she’s happy, when she’s healthy, when she’s playing well.”When she’s playing well, on this surface, she’s one of if not the best player in the world. So what’s going on with her? I think it’s a lot more than we realise.”

Carlos Alcaraz explains surprise defeatCarlos Alcaraz pointed to his packed summer schedule when asked to explain his surprise defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp.

“The tennis schedule is so tight, I’ve been playing a lot of matches lately,” he said.

“With Roland Garros, Wimbledon, Olympics… I took a little break after Olympics. I thought it was enough. It was really helpful for me. Probably it wasn’t enough.

“I came here without as much energy as I thought I was going to come with. But, I mean, I don’t want to put that as an excuse.

“Probably I’m a guy or I’m a player that needs more days or more break coming into the good tournaments or the important ones. So I have to think about it, and I have to learn about it.”
