Max Verstappen was handed a second punishment in the aftermath of the Austrian Grand Prix following his collision with Lando Norris in the latter stages of the race. The Red Bull star led for much of the contest but eventually finished fifth after banging wheels with Norris on lap 63.

Verstappen won Saturday’s Sprint race in Austria and then qualified for the main event on pole position.

And he appeared to be in a two-way battle with Norris to clinch Grand Prix victory at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

But his afternoon took a turn for the worse when Norris attempted to overtake him with eight laps remaining as the two drivers collided.

The smash ended the McLaren ace’s race, with Verstappen dropping to fifth and finishing behind eventual winner George Russell, as well as Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty for his part in the clash with Norris. And he has now been sanctioned further after race stewards added two penalty points to his super-licence. The 26-year-old has chalked up four penalty points over a 12-month period and would be banned if he clocks a total of 12.

“Car 1 [Verstappen] was approaching Turn 3 with Car 4 [Norris] alongside on his left,” read an official statement from the stewards, which explained the time penalty.

“Before turning in, the driver of Car 1 moved to the left, causing a collision with Car 4. The stewards determine that the driver of Car 1 was predominantly at fault and therefore impose the above mentioned penalty in line with precedents.”

The result means Verstappen ends the weekend just 31 points ahead of second-place Charles Leclerc in the Drivers’ Championship standings, with the Ferrari star breathing down the neck of the three-time champion.

And discussing the crash after the race, Verstappen explained: “The move we got together was something I didn’t expect. I saw him coming, of course. I defended a little the inside under braking. We touched on the rear tyres and we both got a puncture from it. And it is something we don’t want to happen.

“For me, it was not moving under braking because every time I moved I was not braking already. Of course, from the outside it always looks like that, but I think I know fairly well what to do in those scenarios.

“Also, he was doing really late dive-bombs and sending it up the inside and hoping the other guys steer out of it, and hope you make the corner, which wasn’t the case.

“It is not always how you race but the corner lends itself to that. I have been in the other position as well where you go for it and it is just the shape of the corner.”
