Max Verstappen has previously expressed his desire to team up with two-time world champion and friend Fernando Alonso for a tilt at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, the Red Bull star insists that the series needs to ‘sort out’ the balance of power (BoP) regulations if he is to make the transition into endurance racing.
The three-time F1 champion has stressed on multiple occasions his desire to compete in endurance racing and sports car series before the prime years of his motorsport career come to an end.
With the internal dynamics and relationship at Red Bull strained and his contract expiring in 2028, this would be a logical time for him to try out the World Endurance Championship’s flagship event. Alternatively, if the race was to fall between Grand Prix weekends, Verstappen could strike up an agreement to take part between F1 races.
However, the Dutchman still has his concerns. He explained: “It’s not only you, you have to work together with your team-mates to try and find the right compromise with the set-up. So I’ve been following it a lot here and there [and] you have a few chats as well.
“But at the moment, I think it’s too early for me to enter because the new regulations as well, I think they need to sort out the BoP a little bit better between the cars. It’s a bit hit and miss here and there, I find.”

Verstappen also raised concerns about the disadvantage his weight would stand him at relative to lighter drivers. “I feel like there needs to be a limit on that,” he added. “Because I might rock up, 80 kilos with kit, but there is also a driver that can be 55 or 60.
“I find like, when you go to Le Mans, you have no chance. You know that already is a couple of tenths a lap. It’s pretty incredible, the difference. So they need to sort that out. There needs to be an average or minimum weight that you need to comply to. But for sure in the future, I would like to race, it’s an incredible event.”
If Verstappen does take the plunge and trial the legendary race, he is keen to do so with Alonso, who is already a two-time Le Mans champion. “I’ve been speaking to Fernando about it,” he revealed last year. “He said he would only want to do it with me again. That would be really cool.”
