Logan Sargeant has been cleared of nudging a parking bollard in Barcelona after being accused of being behind the wheel of the white Mercedes by ex-Formula 1 driver David Coulthard. Sargeant’s F1 career appears to be nearing an end, with his stay at Williams not expected to be extended into the 2025 campaign.

The American, 23, has scored just one championship point since joining Williams in the 2023 season, and he’s now being linked with a switch to IndyCar. A series of crashes, mistakes, poor qualifying and a lack of race pace have all contributed toward Sargeant’s short-lived career on the F1 grid, and the Williams driver hasn’t received any sympathy from one of the team’s former drivers, Coulthard, who poked fun at him in Barcelona.

A white Mercedes was touch-tight to a parking bollard in the Barca car park, and Coulthard pointed fingers at Sargeant. “Any idea which Mercedes engine-powered driver this car could belong to?” Coulthard started. ” Yep, you’re right, Logan Sargeant. Making contact without even being on track. Let’s hope he has a clean weekend.”

The cheeky dig was met with some pushback on social media, with an F1-accredited photographer stating with 100 per cent certainty that Sargeant wasn’t driving a white Mercedes in Barcelona. The American was said to have been behind the wheel of a black Mercedes. “I can tell you with 100 per cent certainty that the white Mercedes in question was not Logan Sargeant‘s car, he was driving a black one,” photographer Kym Illman said on X.

“The driver in the white Merc was Alex Albon. But even then, there’s no guarantee it was Alex who had driven it up to touch the bollard as often the trainers are behind the wheel. Record set straight!”

Fans were pleased to hear Sargeant’s name seemingly being cleared, with the driver already having a rough ride in the sport, with Williams boss James Vowles issuing a very public plea to soon-to-be free agent Carlos Sainz ahead of his exit from Ferrari. “Actually thank you for saying this! Logan already is getting a lot of hate, that bit was not funny nor true then,” one fan said.

Sargeant went on to have a poor weekend in Barcelona – not quite the clean weekend Coulthard was looking for. Sargeant finished 20th in the first of back-to-back-to-back races in Europe, with Austria this weekend, followed by the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Nonetheless, Sargeant is remaining optimistic, with his future yet to be officially announced. “I’m looking forward to heading back to Austria for the second race of the triple-header,” he told Williams’ official website.

“It should be a better track for us than Spain, and it’s always an exciting track to drive with plenty of quick corners and long straights. The Sprint Race will open up some extra opportunities, and it looks like some rain could affect the race on Sunday, so it’s all to play for.”

Teammate Alex Albon, the team’s point-scorer-in-chief, added: “As we leave Barcelona and head to Austria for the second round of the triple header, we are hoping to bounce back after a tough weekend. With Austria being a Sprint weekend, as well as the fact that the weather might be a factor, there will be an opportunity to achieve a good result. On paper, this track suits our car more than Barcelona so let’s see what the weekend brings.”
