Spanish press blast England for dismal final displayThe Spanish press hasn’t held back when criticising the English showing during last night’s final.

The reaction in Spain is that the eventual champions got off lightly, with England failing to give La Roja a real test.

SPORT claimed: “England’s victory would have meant a surely irreparable damage within this sport.”

AS wrote: “England played as they have done throughout the Euros, that is, for nothing, with the value of the team less than the sum of its individualities, Foden missing, Saka not receiving the ball and Bellingham fighting alone.”

While Marca added: “Then, of course, there is the curse of Kane. The London striker, who did not have a good tournament despite scoring three goals, was substituted after 60 minutes in the grand final… and with the defeat his jinx for the titles remains intact. Six finals played… six finals lost.”

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker claimed: “I think he’s been the right person to bring the nation together in terms of the football team.

What next for Gareth Southgate and the Three Lions? It’s the morning after the night before when things were meant to be so, so different for England.

There was no partying in Trafalgar Square, instead, a late Mikel Oyarzabal handed Spain the victory in dramatic fashion.

Plenty of questions have popped up following the defeat, most of them surrounding the future of manager Gareth Southgate.

Will that Spain game prove to be his last in charge of England?

And what about the squad too? Which players will drop out and who will replace them going forward?

Rodri heaps praise on Cole PalmerRodri, who was substituted at half-time with an injury, has singled out Cole Palmer as a player he believes will shine for England for many years to come.

“I know these guys, Cole Palmer is a top player,” said Rodri after being named Player of the Tournament.

“He’s going to be a huge star in the next years. Imagine what we have next.

“We are so happy. We made history but it doesn’t stop here. We have talent and we’ll keep going. It’s important to celebrate what we have done.”

Gareth Southgate ‘devastated for everyone'”I’m devastated for everyone, we have just fallen a little short,” says Gareth Southgate in his latest post-match interview.

“We had a little bit of momentum in the game at that point [when Cole Palmer equalised]. There’s a big chance at the end to equalise too but across the 90 minutes, I’m not sure we did enough.

“Spain press well and you have to keep the ball when you win it back. In the end, that’s the bit that takes more out of your legs.

“I think the players will take enormous credit for getting us to where we did but when you’re as close as that, you have to take your chances.

“They have represented the shirt with pride and haven’t been beaten until the very end. I just think tonight Spain had more control of the game.”

England have ‘big decision to make’It remains to be seen if Gareth Southgate will stay on as England manager following another painful defeat in a major final.

Rio Ferdinand believes the FA will have a big call to make before Southgate’s contract expires in December.

“You have to look at what talent pool we have and I don’t feel like we are putting them in the best position possible,” he says on BBC One.

“I think the manager has to take some stick for that. The FA have got a big decision to make.”

Gareth Southgate gives credit to Spain”We’ve competed until the very end of the final,” continues England boss Gareth Southgate.

“I think today we didn’t keep possession of the ball quite well enough. We defended well but when you win the ball back you need to get out of that pressure and we weren’t able to do that.

“That meant they had more control of the game and that can wear you down a bit. That said, we got the equaliser and then it was wide open.

“A big chance at the end to equalise, so as always, it is fine margins. I do think they were the best team in the tournament.”

More from Gareth SouthgateGareth Southgate is asked if tonight’s final was simply a step too far for his England players.

He replies: “It is easy to say that and there is definitely a disadvantage to having a day less to prepare, but we were still in it come 80 minutes.

“It is going to take a while to pick the bones out of it, really.”

Quizzed on his decision to replace Harry Kane on the hour mark, he explains: “Physically it has been tough for him. He came into the tournament short on games.

“He has not quite reached the level we all would have hoped. The games are hugely demanding and we thought Ollie’s freshness would allow us to press better and offer a press in behind.

“I thought the substitutes came on and did what we asked them to do.”

Harry Kane: An opportunity missed”It’s hard to put into words how we’re all feeling right now,” says England captain Harry Kane in his post-match interview.

“A tough game. We did well to get back into the game and struggled to build on that. To concede late on is really tough to take.

“We’ve been coming from behind all tournament, we’ve got it in the locker. We didn’t take the next step and win it.

“In the first half, we struggled. We couldn’t keep the ball. Second half was better and we got the goal. We got caught with a cross and that’s the final.

“It’s an opportunity missed. These finals aren’t easy to get to. You have to take it when it comes and we haven’t done it again.

“It’s extremely painful and it’ll hurt for a long time. Gareth will go away and take time to decide. We wanted to win it for him.”

Will tonight be Gareth Southgate’s last dance? There has been plenty of speculation about Gareth Southgate’s future as England manager in recent weeks.

He will be out of contract in December and there has been an expectation that he will amicably step down after the Euros.

However, reports have suggested that FA bosses are determined to convince Southgate to stay on regardless of tonight’s result.

Speaking to Sky News about his future earlier this week, he said: “It would be impossible for me to make a logical decision at the moment on any of that.

“My sole focus for two years has been winning this tournament. The last five, six weeks have been an absolute rollercoaster.

“I don’t actually know where I am with anything other than very focused on preparing the team for this game and determined to keep leading them in the way we have over the last month.”

Speaking to The Times, Rooney said: “I just have a feeling about Mainoo, that he is going to score and prove decisive.

“If you think of him in the tournament, he has got into good positions going forward and I think Spain will do their homework and close off space for Harry Kane, Foden, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham.

“But that will leave space for a midfielder arriving late, and Mainoo will get one from a cut-back.”

That is if you’re watching from the comfort of your own home, with tennis goers having shared fears about a potential Wimbledon-Euros overlap.

The men’s Wimbledon final is scheduled for 2pm UK time, with the Euros final six hours later at 8pm.

But despite the close proximity, Djokovic has reassured Wimbledon fans all the SW19 festivities will be wrapped up before kick-off.

He said: “I think that the English crowd will have best of both worlds because I think the finals is at night, so we are starting I think at 2pm, so they’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the tennis and football as well.”

Rumoured XI: Pickford; Saka, Walker, Guehi, Stones, Trippier; Rice, Mainoo, Foden, Bellingham; Kane

Lamine Yamal could break German law by starting for SpainLamine Yamal has been one of Euro 2024’s standout stars, with the teenage sensation a genuine candidate for Player of the Tournament.

His wonder strike against France earned him the title as the youngest-ever goalscorer at a European Championship, with the recently-turned 17-year-old likely to have a major say in tonight’s final.

But should Yamal turn out for La Roja in Berlin, he could be found in breach of German law.

That’s because in Germany, under 18s are prohibited from working beyond 8pm – the scheduled kick-off time for the final.

Unfortunately for those of an English persuasion, exceptions are made for athletes competing in competitions, meaning Yamal will be involved for Spain tonight.

Bitter Germans accuse Gareth Southgate’s England of ‘cheating’ way to finalIt wasn’t meant to end like this for the Germans.

Not that they’re bitter about it, though…

In the build-up to today’s showdown against Spain, Gareth Southgate’s side have been accused of ‘cheating’ their way to the final.

German outlet BILD wrote in their Euro 2024 final preview: “The signs on Sunday are clear: While the British cheated their way into the final, the Spanish impressed throughout the entire tournament.”

Talk about sour grapes!
