Alex de Minaur said he would be watching England’s World Cup semi-final against Australia with his girlfriend Katie Boulter. The tennis power couple hail from the two nations, making for interesting viewing come Wednesday. But De Minaur will first focus on the Canadian Open, where he reached his maiden Masters 1000 final.

De Minaur completed a career milestone on Saturday as he downed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-1 6-3 to reach the biggest final of his career. Before this week, the world No 18 had never even been to the quarter-final stage of a Masters tournament and he now finds himself one win away from the title.

The Australian impressed in the semi-final as he needed just 77 minutes to sweep past his opponent, hitting nine unforced errors to the Spaniard’s 38. While he has been impressive in Toronto, De Minaur has still had time for the World Cup taking place in his home nation and kept an eye as the Matildas advanced to the semi-final.

“It’s amazing. It’s huge, especially playing at home and the amount of crowd support they’re being able to bring to these matches and just the excitement,” the 24-year-old said of the squad’s success.

“Look, they got the deciding penalty. I think it was yesterday? Yeah. And now they’re in the semi-finals of the World Cup, and I believe they play England; right?” Australia’s next opponents will be significant for De Minaur, whose girlfriend is British No 1 Boulter.

And the world No 18 already had plans to watch the game with her on Wednesday, when the pair are set to be at the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati. He added: “So I’ve got something to kind of watch with Katie and, hopefully, the Matildas get the win as well.”

De Minaur will be hoping to give Australia something else to celebrate by winning the biggest title of his career come Sunday. Before this year, all six of his titles had come at ATP 250 level and he managed to win his first ATP 500 in Acapulco back in March.

But going deep in one of the biggest tournaments had been one step too far for the Australian before this week and he’s looking forward to fighting for the crown. “Well, it feels great. It feels like, you know, all the hard work, all the hours on the court, off the court, they’re paying off. It’s good to see those results,” he explained.

“Because a lot of times you put in all this effort and hard work and the results just don’t come; right? So it’s always a huge boost of confidence when you’re able to go on these deep runs. But, you know, I get to play a final tomorrow. And, you know, the job is not done. Keep on going.”
