Daniil Medvedev has promised to do something “crazy” if he wins the US Open.
He is the only former champion left in the men’s singles draw following shock early exits for Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.
Nick Kyrgios interviewed Medvedev after the world No. 5 reached the quarter-final. And Medvedev poked fun at their fourth-round meeting in Flushing Meadows two years ago.
Kyrgios knocked Medvedev out of the US Open when the Russian was the world No. 1 and defending champion. It was the Australian’s last appearance in New York before being sidelined by injuries.
Back in Flushing Meadows in a punditry role, Kyrgios took to Arthur Ashe Stadium to interview the fifth seed after his convincing win over Nuno Borges. And Medvedev quickly brought up his four-set defeat from 2022.
Kyrgios praised the 28-year-old for his consistency and asked how much work went into it. “I try to work hard. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. There are days where it’s tougher to go out on court to practice,” he replied.

“But I have the mentality if the other guy practices more than me, I have less chances to win and I want to win all the time. So I try to practice as much as I could. I have a lot of success here at US Open.”
Medvedev has now reached at least the quarter-final in five of his last six US Open appearances. The outlier came in 2022 when Kyrgios beat him in the round of 16. And the Russian pretended to think about who sent him packing.
Laughing, he added: “And last time I lost [in the] fourth round it was… ah, it was against you, right? No, but good memories.” Medvedev’s only Grand Slam triumph came in Flushing Meadows three years ago when he beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets to lift the trophy.

He celebrated by recreating the dead fish move, inspired by FIFA. Medvedev is known for his unusual celebrations – he has previously danced and lifted up his shorts to show off his muscles. He also gave a famous on-court interview at the 2019 US Open where he told a booing crowd that they helped him win before fanning himself.
And the former world No. 1 promised to deliver the antics throughout the tournament. “I mean, I feel like I know what I want to do if I win my next Grand Slam – when I win it hopefully,” he continued.
“But a couple of times I was close and didn’t manage to do the celebration. So better to win matches and then the celebration. Press conferences come as they come. I just hope I can win more matches. That’s where you have more opportunities to speak or to do some crazy stuff.”
But Medvedev has a tough task ahead if he wants to lift another Grand Slam trophy. He will face either world No. 1 Jannik Sinner or 14th seed Tommy Paul in the quarters.
