Carlos Alcaraz used his camera sign-off at the Canadian Open to send Fernando Alonso a message about his strategy. The world No 1 has previously sent his well-wishes to the Aston Martin driver. But this time around he decided to help Alonso out with a plan for the next Formula One race in Holland.
Alcaraz made his debut in Toronto this week, with the Canadian tournament alternating between the Ontario capital and Montreal each year. He had a tough first opponent in rising American star Ben Shelton but managed to come through in two sets.
As is the tradition for a tennis player, the top seed signed the camera lens to celebrate his victory. But he took the opportunity to send an unusual message, outlining a race plan for Alonso.
“Soft, soft, hard,” he wrote, indicating which tyres to use for the first race after the summer break. And Alcaraz had another strategy in mind for his compatriot, adding: “Manual undercut!”

It’s not the first time the 20-year-old dedicated one of his camera messages to the two-time World Champion. During the Miami Open, he wrote “33 soon” on the camera, indicating his wish for Alonso to win his 33rd race with the Miami GP track being built around the Hard Rock Stadium during the tennis tournament.
And Alcaraz renewed his wish for Alonso to win another race when the 42-year-old congratulated him on his recent Wimbledon triumph. “The best! Congratulations @carlosalcaraz,” the F1 star wrote with a medal, trophy and clapping emojis.
“Thanks Fernando!!! Now it’s your turn! 33,” the 12-time title winner replied. As well as his important plan for Alonso’s next race, Alcaraz has also been using his camera signatures to send a message to his friends while playing in Canada.

After defeating Hubert Hurkacz in a thrilling three-setter on Thursday night, Alcaraz had another unique sign-off. “You know,” he wrote, also drawing a face with the tongue sticking out.
Explaining his latest camera message, the 20-year-old said his friends often made fun of him for over-using the phrase whenever he spoke English. The world No 1 said: “I put that up because my friends make fun of me because they say it’s the only thing I say when I speak English.”
