Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack described the rumours linking Adrian Newey to his team as ‘a credit to Lawrence Stroll’s vision’ while refusing to confirm their validity directly. The legendary engineer had previously been heavily linked with Ferrari, but the Silverstone-based team remain keenly interested.
When Newey’s departure from Red Bull was confirmed ahead of the Miami Grand Prix earlier this year, a string of teams up and down the paddock began courting the 65-year-old’s signature. However, the two most keen parties were reported to be Aston Martin and Ferrari.
Initially, Ferrari looked like the leading contenders with some outlets reporting that contract talks with Newey were nearly at their conclusion. However, ahead of the race in Barcelona this weekend, a report from The Times stated that Aston Martin are now the frontrunners in the race for his signature.
As per the report, the Essex-born engineer was given a private tour of the team’s facilities in Silverstone and have already negotiated a salary. Additionally, unlike with Ferrari, a move to Aston Martin would allow the experienced Brit to remain in his home country with his family, making it an enticing option.
When asked by Sky Sports F1 about the latest round of rumours, Krack said: “When you see how many names have been linked to our project lately, it’s a credit to Lawrence’s vision. I think it gives credibility to the project. Maybe a couple of years ago if we linked these names to our team, nobody would have taken it seriously. I think we are flattered by that.”

Lance Stroll was also coy when probed over the rumours. “Everyone in this paddock wants Adrian Newey,” he said. “I hear a lot of things mainly from you guys! Last week I heard he was going to Ferrari, now us, next week it will be Williams! So I listen to you guys. You tell me more.”
Should Newey decide that Aston Martin is the best path forward, it will come as a devastating blow to Lewis Hamilton, who made clear his desire to work with the former Williams and Red Bull aerodynamicist when he makes the move to Maranello in 2025.
“I think he would be an amazing addition [to Ferrari],” Hamilton professed. “I think they’ve already got a great team, they’re already making huge progress and strides forward… the car is quicker this year. But yeah, it would be a privilege to work with him.”
