Carlos Alcaraz stunned the crowd at the Canadian Open as he hit an incredible tweener winner despite losing to Tommy Paul. The world No 1 suffered his first defeat in two months. But he still managed to entertain with a shot that fans said Roger Federer would have been proud of.
Alcaraz lost to Paul at the Canadian Open for the second year in a row, this time going out in the quarter-final 6-3 4-6 6-3. 12 months ago, he also succumbed to the 26-year-old in Montreal though the defeat came in his opening match.
After a tough opening set that saw him berate himself and throw his racket, the top seed was able to regroup and win the second. And the turning point seemed to be an epic point that saw him hit the ball between his legs for a winner before he broke in the next game.
With Alcaraz at the net, 12th seed Paul hit a lob that the Spaniard chased down before making the tweener, leaving the crowd in awe as he pumped his fist in the air. And fans weren’t surprised that he pulled the shot out the bag despite being unable to play his best tennis.

“Literally won the next 10 points in a match where he could not hit a forehand. Even in the changeover he said he had no feel at all,” one fan wrote on Reddit. Another added: “Literally a human highlight reel. Playing nowhere near his best tennis and he produces shots like this.”
Alcaraz was also compared to Federer, with some saying the Swiss tennis legend would be proud of his tweener winner. “Alcaraz is a joy to watch even when he plays badly. I haven’t enjoyed watching a tennis player this much since Federer broke out,” one said.

A second user wrote: “Federer would have been proud of that one.” Alcaraz went on to win the second set after the incredible point but he lost the third, crashing out of the Canadian Open.
But Alcaraz himself agreed the tweener winner gave him the momentum in the second set even though he went on to lose. “Yeah, I think, after that moment, I probably increased my level a little bit. You know, I’m going to say it’s a key moment of the match, you know. I pushed myself up a little bit. I’m going to say, after that moment, it was unbelievable,” he said.
