Graeme Souness broke down in tears as he revealed he was the target of a shooting in the 1980s during the latter part of his playing career. The 71-year-old played for a whole host of clubs, including Liverpool and Rangers, before turning his hand at management.

Souness has established himself as a straight-talking pundit in recent decades and spent 15 years working for Sky Sports between 2008 and 2023.

But he was a fierce midfielder on the pitch and helped Liverpool win five top-flight titles and three European Cup trophies.

Souness features on the Everything I Know About Me podcast from the Daily Mail in a new five-part series as he opens up about his life and career.

“This is me and I don’t really care if you like me or don’t like me,” Souness explains in the preview. “I never started off in football and saw it as a popularity contest.”

And in another clip, he states: “I said, ‘Campbell, what was happening on Saturday, lots of strange faces in the directors box?’ He said, ‘We didn’t want to tell you but they’ve phoned in a message that they’re going to attempt to shoot you at the weekend.’”

Following a six-and-a-half year spell with Liverpool, Souness signed for Sampdoria in 1984 and won the Italian Cup during his time at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.

He joined Rangers in 1986 and won the League and Cup double during his maiden campaign at the club, before leading the team to two more Scottish Premiership titles and three Scottish Cup triumphs as player-manager.

He officially ended his playing career in 1991 and went on to take charge of Liverpool, guiding the Reds to FA Cup success in 1992.

Souness, who was capped 59 times by Scotland as a player, won more silverware as manager of Galatasaray, before leading Blackburn to League Cup victory in 2002 following stints in charge of Southampton, Torino and Benfica.

His final spell in the dugout came during an 18-month period in charge of Newcastle between September 2004 and February 2006, but his tenure ended with his sacking following a run of five defeats and a draw in his final six matches.

“It doesn’t worry me in the slightest about getting cancelled, who cares?” Souness explains in another preview of the podcast. “This is my story as I remember. I’m putting it out there, I have a legacy and I’m proud of the vast majority of my story.”
