Red Bull star Max Verstappen will start the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from pole position after overcoming three underwhelming practice sessions to clock the quickest lap in qualifying. The Dutchman will start the race ahead of McLaren duo Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Verstappen’s car struggled for pace in Imola on Friday as preparations for the seventh Grand Prix of the season got underway. But his team were able to find solutions as the second day on track evolved, although Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez will start the race from 11th.
Verstappen has won four of the first six races this season but was surprisingly beaten to the chequered flag by Norris at the Miami Grand Prix last time out. And the 26-year-old will be under pressure to return to winning ways in Italy and stamp out McLaren’s hopes of launching an attack on the F1 title.
Meanwhile, Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will start the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from fourth and fifth respectively, with Mercedes ace George Russell sixth on the grid. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, will start from eighth.

Norris makes ‘stupid’ commentMcLaren ace Lando Norris has labelled people “stupid” if they thought Max Verstappen wouldn’t recover to enjoy a decent qualifying performance at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Verstappen suffered misery during his free practice sessions but then enjoyed a fine showing in qualifying as he bagged pole position.
“Max hasn’t had the smoothest weekend, but I think if anyone doubted Red Bull or him coming back and doing a good job in qualifying, they’re a bit stupid,” Norris said on Saturday. “We expected them to be back on track.”

Piastri jokes after being stripped of P2Oscar Piastri taunted himself after being stripped of P2 ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The McLaren star had clocked the second fastest time in qualifying behind Max Verstappen, but was then moved three places down the grid for impeding Kevin Magnussen at the Tamburello chicane in Q1.
After the decision was announced, Piastri posted two images to X which showed him in the aftermath of his qualifying efforts. And he wrote: “These aged well. Fun while it lasted.” The Australian even included a laughing face emoji.

Hamilton offered hope by WolffLewis Hamilton has been offered hope by Toto Wolff after the Mercedes chief insisted the Silver Arrows are moving in the right direction. Hamilton is set to start the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from eighth, while his team-mate George Russell will begin the race in sixth place.
“If you look at the gap to the front and our closest competitors, you see progress,” Wolff explained ahead of the seventh Grand Prix of the year. “P6 and P8 are not the positions we want to be in. We have been saying that for a while, but we see that the lead of others is getting smaller. It takes time and we have to be patient, that’s the reality at the moment.
“We know we have developments in the pipeline that will improve the balance of the car. Even though our positions are not good enough now, we are moving in the right direction. During the race, we will focus on maximising the package we have now and try to score good points.”
