Bryson DeChambeau, with the integrity of Rory McIlroy in mind, clinched his second major championship in four years at the U.S. Open in North Carolina last weekend.
DeChambeau triumphed over McIlroy by a single shot in an intense final-round showdown at Pinehurst No. 2. McIlroy was playing in the group ahead of DeChambeau alongside Patrick Cantlay, while Matthieu Pavon partnered with the eventual champion.
Pavon started the final round tied with McIlroy and Cantlay, trailing DeChambeau by three shots, but couldn’t maintain his position during a dramatic final 18 holes.
In the preceding group, McIlroy’s bogey on the final hole meant DeChambeau needed a par at 18 to secure his victory. After finding trouble off the tee, the LIV Golf star was forced to lay up into a bunker, before executing one of the shots of his career to set up a putt for the win.

Meanwhile, Pavon had reached the green in two, giving him a birdie putt to tie third with Cantlay and Tony Finau at four-under. However, he left his birdie attempt short, leaving himself a couple of feet inside DeChambeau’s par putt.
After hitting his effort, Pavon marked his ball, which didn’t sit well with a large portion of the Pinehurst crowd who felt he was denying DeChambeau his moment of glory. However, DeChambeau was seen calming the crowd before addressing his ball.
The reason for that, as Pavon explained to the ForePlay podcast, was that DeChambeau didn’t want to run the risk of Pavon making his putt – and showing him the read of the green for his own winning putt in the process. He explained he didn’t feel that was fair to McIlroy, and wanted to maintain the integrity of the competition.
DeChambeau was understanding of the situation, with Pavon revealing the American had told him: “[DeChambeau] said ‘Thanks for not doing it because you would have shown me the line and I think it is not fair for Rory and I do not want to win it that way’.”
Following his triumph, DeChambeau is set to return to action at the LIV Golf event in Nashville. Meanwhile, Pereira is back on the PGA Tour this week as he prepares to compete in the Travelers Championship.
