Aston Martin have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Adrian Newey after holding productive talks with the Red Bull design guru, according to reports. Newey will leave his current role in the early stages of next year, having spent the last two decades at Red Bull following their entry into F1 in 2005.
The 65-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Ferrari, who have tried and failed to secure his signature on a handful of previous occasions. However, it seems that Aston Martin could be about to send shockwaves around the F1 paddock by landing Newey for themselves.
Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll recently held talks with Newey before the Red Bull designer was given a private tour of the team’s Silverstone factory, according to The Times. It is said that Stroll is ‘confident’ that a deal can be done to sign Newey, who he believes would help Aston Martin to close the gap to Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren.

The report adds that Aston Martin are now the leading contenders to land Newey, having moved ahead of Ferrari in the battle to snap him up. The Italian team are no longer thought to be at the front of the queue, with those links having ‘cooled’ in recent weeks.
It was reported in April that Aston Martin had presented a significant offer to Newey in an attempt to lure him away from Red Bull. That offer still appears to be on the table, but nothing has been rubber-stamped and other teams have also staged talks with Newey over the last few months.

Aston Martin declined to comment on their reported interest in Newey when approached by The Times but a spokesperson was quoted as saying: “[The team] is a very appealing project with Lawrence Stroll’s vision, a state-of-the-art new technology campus and exciting partnerships with Aramco and Honda.
“Many high-profile individuals across all areas of the team are linked to the project, but we don’t have anything to announce.”
Newey is arguably the greatest technical mastermind in F1 history and has been designing Red Bull’s cars since joining the team in 2005. He has played an influential role in shaping their recent dominance after nailing the widespread regulation changes that were introduced in 2022.
