Venus is out!In her 100th career match at the US Open, Venus Williams was sent packing in her most lopsided loss in Queens.
Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen quickly dispatched the 43-year-old American, who won the US Open twice in 2000 and 2001, with an unexpected 6-1, 6-1.
“Someone told that me in 1997 Venus already played a final here … and I was just born so for me it was incredible to play a legend like her,” the 26-year-old winner said on-court. “Yeah, I have huge respect for her to be there at 43 years old. It’s amazing, really.”
While Minnen will next play another American, fellow qualifier Sachia Vickery who upset the 21st seed Donna Vekic in three sets, everyone will be wondering what is next for Venus Williams.

VAR fails on first attemptThe US Open is using video replay on the main showcourts this year, allowing umpires to re-watch close calls in case their initial judgement was incorrect.
And the new VAR-style technology finally got its first outing in the final game of Murray’s match against Moutet when the Frenchman was called for a double bounce.
Fans watching on TV from home and spectators in the Grandstand court were shown a replay of the moment on a continuous loop. But it turned into a shambolic first attempt at introducing VAR to tennis when the umpire announced that their technology had failed and wasn’t showing the replay to officials, meaning they couldn’t change the call.
She explained that the replay being shown on court came from TV cameras and not from the officials system, meaning the footage couldn’t be used to make a judgement.
Murray won the point to go 30-30 while serving for the match at 5-3 in the third set. He needed four match points to eventually clinch the victory, saving a break point en route.

It marked his first match win since Wimbledon, as the British No 1 was on a four-match losing streak coming into New York. But Norrie said it was normal to experience highs and lows during the long tennis season.
“I think it’s always going to be ups and downs in someone’s career. I think, yeah, for me I went through playing not where I wanted to be,” he said after the match.
“Yeah, I think it’s completely normal, and I had such a great start to the year and such a good last couple years. I think I’ve got a great team around me, and I think it’s, for me, I know I have the confidence in me to come back.
“Yeah, I’m really feeling good already this week. I think it’s, yeah, kind of my best surface here on the hard courts. Yeah, I’m really going to take it match by match and get back to where I was at the beginning of this year. I think it starts on the practice court and then I was able to show that on the match court today.”

Jabeur apologises to rival after winningOns Jabeur explained that she apologised to Camila Osorio after defeating the 21-year-old 7-5 7-6(4) in a rollercoaster match.
The fifth seed led by a double break at 4-1 in the first set before going 4-5 down as she struggled to breath and called the doctor to the court, having her blood pressure checked.
After taking the first set, Jabeur had two match points at 5-3 with Osorio serving but she couldn’t take them. The pair then traded breaks as the Tunisian failed to serve out the match twice but she eventually got it done in a tiebreak.
Jabeur and Osorio had a lengthy chat at the net afterwards, and the No 5 seed explained that she had to apologise. “She’s such a nice person, she asked me if I’m feeling okay. I told her, ‘not really.’ She told me I’m such a warrior,” Jabeur said of the world No 68.

‘US Open crowd lacks respect’Laura Siegemund has taken aim at the US Open crowd for showing her ‘no respect’ following an eventful defeat to Coco Gauff.
The qualifier came close to pulling off an upset against Gauff after forcing a third and deciding set, but she proved unpopular with the crowd for the time she was taking in between serves.
They were some boos towards the end of the match to the 35-year-old and Siegemund felt as though she was treated with zero respect.
She said: “They had no respect for the way I played. They have no respect for the player that I am. They have no respect for tennis, for good tennis. This is something that I have to say hurts really bad.
“There is no doubt that I am slow. There is no doubt about that. I’m getting time violations. There is no doubt about that I should be quicker…but at the same time, it’s how I play. I’m very slow. Swiatek reacts to first-round winIga Swiatek got her title defence off to a successful start on Monday. The world No 1 needed just 58 minutes to defeat Rebecca Peterson 6-0 6-1.
Speaking after the match, the Pole said it was easier to ease into her first match at the US Open this year, having previously struggled with distractions.
“I remember when I played my first matches in US Open, I always felt like there is so much going on around, and it was a little bit tougher to focus,” she explained.
“But this year I didn’t feel it, because I practiced couple of times on the centre court. Even, you know, with all the kids around, because I think the entry was free and so many people came to watch our practices. It was amazing and I got used to the noise and everything.”

VAR makes its tennis bowThe technology takeover is very much upon us, as VAR-based software lands in tennis for the US Open.
Technology very similar to that now widely used in football is to be implemented, which is almost certainly set to cause controversy aplenty.
Players will have three challenges each set to dispute controversial decisions such as double bounces or hindrance calls. The umpire can then review the decision on a tablet at the chair while fans can also judge on the big on-court screens.
The new football-style technology – in addition to the electronic line-calling in New York – will only be available this year on specific courts.

The event is no longer the only Major to have different balls in the for the two singles competitions with the women now using the heavier Wilson balls used by the men.
Emma Raducanu benefitted from the lighter balls when winning the title in 2021, but now the playing field is somewhat considerably more level.
British No.7 Lily Miyazaki said: “From this year, we’re both using the extra duty balls, which are a bit heavier. It suits some players and for me it’s worked so I’m happy.
“We used them in college and it has helped me whereas obviously up until last year with the regular duty balls, I wasn’t able to really control it or feel the ball really well.”
