Lewis Hamilton shows off his impressive surfing skillsLewis Hamilton, Toto Wolff and Mercedes were left frustrated at the Belgian Grand Prix as Max Verstappen scooped his eighth straight victory. The Silver Arrows had high hopes of getting on the podium but were forced to watch the post-race celebrations from afar, with Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc coming home in second and third respectively.

Mercedes will be desperate to return to contention after the summer break, although the German team may be worried after Wolff branded their race a ‘vicious cycle’ as his drivers once again struggled with bouncing at high speed. The problem held Mercedes back for the entirety of last year and it seems as though it may be rearing its head once again in a crushing blow for all those connected with the Brackley squad.

“The main limiting factor today and yesterday was the bouncing,” said Wolff. “The car is just bouncing literally every straight. Even Blanchimont was a corner that Lewis had to lift, which is an easy flat normally.

“You’re bouncing on the straight, you overheat the tyres on the braking, so that is a vicious cycle. It was the main limiting factor this weekend and it’s frustrating to check out for the holidays like this.”

Sergio Perez title hopes written offChristian Horner says that Sergio Perez knows he is not going to win this year’s Drivers’ Championship title, leaving Max Verstappen as the only contender to scoop the end-of-season honours.

Horner said: “I think Checo knows that, barring a disaster for Max, this championship is out of reach.

“So it’s about him maximising his own performance, not losing ground to any of the rivals behind and trying to pick up a few wins between now and the end of the year.”

Max Verstappen mocks F1 rivalsMax Verstappen showed off his utter dominance over the likes of Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton with a cheeky request during the closing stages of yesterday’s race.

The Dutchman joked that Red Bull should have called him into the pits to practice their stops as a result of his massive advantage at the front of the order.

He said: “I could also push open and we do another stop? A little bit of pitstop training.”

However, his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase was having none of it as he replied: “No. Not this time.”

Horner snuck up behind his Mercedes rival and pinched him on the backside, causing Wolff to flinch and shout: “That’s harassment!”
