There are hundreds of World War II films and many of the very best are about the part the British played in the fight against Hitler.

Film fan website IMDb has ranked the Top 10 British World War II films of all time and it turns out that The Bridge on the River Kwai didn’t make it to No 1.

Check out the full list below, which includes a couple of joint productions with the Americans, but they still count because of the focus on British involvement in history’s deadliest conflict.

10. Ice Cold in Alex (1958)Based on the Christopher Landon novel of the same name, this British war film takes place during the Western Desert campaign of World War II. The movie stars John Mills as a British officer assigned to escort an ambulance to the Allied lines in Alexandria, Egypt. However, he soon realises that one of his passengers (Sylvia Syms’ Sister Diana and Anthony Quayle’s Captain van der Poel) is a German spy.

9. The Hill (1965)Another World War II film set in North Africa, this one takes place in an army prison. Based on the play of the same name, this character-driven drama stars Sean Connery, who agreed to play the lead as it was a change of pace from James Bond.

8. Atonement (2007)Based on Ian McEwan’s novel, Atonement is a romantic drama starring James McAvoy, Keira Knightley and Saoirse Ronan. Nominated for seven Oscars, Joe Wright’s film follows the consequences of a crime across 60 years.

7. Dunkirk (2017)Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic recreates the British evacuation of Dunkirk in June 1940, as the Nazis advanced through France. Starring an ensemble cast including Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Michael Caine and Harry Styles in his film debut, the movie focuses in on the perspectives of the land, the sea and the air across a week, a day and an hour. Filmed on the actual beaches, Dunkirk was nominated for eight Oscars and is considered one of the greatest war films ever made.
