Shane Lowry admitted he finds it ‘embarrassing’ that he is only playing his first Tour Championship at the age of 37. The Irishman has qualified for the event for the first time but will begin seven shots behind the leader before a ball has even been hit.
Lowry has been a consistent performer at the highest level for a decade and won the Open Championship in 2019. However, featuring at the Tour Championship has always eluded him.
He admits that he could have an advantage, though, claiming some of his rivals have been complaining about the difficulty of the East Lake Golf Course.
“It’s nice to be here,” Lowry said.
“It’s almost embarrassing that I haven’t been here. I’ve been a pro a long time. It’s always a goal at the start of the year to be at East Lake and thankfully this year I got to fulfil it.
“Everybody keeps saying how different it is, but it’s obviously just a new golf course for me, so I don’t really know anything different, which is great.
“It’s great to hear the lads moaning about it inside the locker room and I’m happy with what I see. It’s going to play quite difficult. If you miss fairways you’re going to struggle to make pars, and it’s going to be hard to get the ball close to the pins.
“I think I’m on a level playing field with the guys that have played here… like Rory has played here something like 12 or 14 times. He’s obviously won here three times.
“When you’re coming back and it’s the same venue they do have one up on you if it’s the same golf course, but it’s a completely different golf course. So I feel like I’m on a level playing field with those guys.”

Lowry will compete for the £23m winner’s prize from a total fund of £76m. He had an amusing start in Atlanta after discovering one interviewer did not know who Oasis were.
The band, who are set to reunite for a world tour in 2025, were Lowry’s answer when he was quizzed on who he would want to have a drink with. Realising that the interviewer was completely oblivious, a stunned Lowry paused before saying: “Oh my God, you don’t know who Oasis are?”
He continued: “You are obviously way younger than me…. but this (the reunion) is the biggest news ever. Ok, you need to look up Oasis.”
