Try this hack out before you throw away your pineapple skins.
We could all be doing more to reduce our food waste, but sometimes it’s difficult to find a good use for skins and peels that we would normally just chuck in the bin. You can always throw them into compost, but if you don’t have a garden then you’re still going to end up eventually throwing your food waste away.
But the next time you’re preparing yourself some fresh pineapple chunks, think twice before you throw away the skin you cut off.
According to health experts on TikTok, pineapple skin can actually be quite beneficial to your health, and you can use alongside two other common ingredients to make a delicious drink that will improve your digestion.
What’s more, the tonic could also reduce inflammation in your body and help curb your sugar cravings.
The video, shared by Best Natural Recipes, stated: “Did you know that if you remove the skin of a pineapple and instead of throwing it away, cook it in water, the pineapple skin will release bromelain – and enzyme capable of reducing water retention in your body, improving digestion and reducing inflammation.
“And if you add ginger and cinnamon to this mix, you can create a very effective drink that can flatten your abdomen very quickly.”
To prepare the mixture, you should first wash your pineapple skins to make sure they’re free from any unwanted dirt. Then, bring two litres of water to the boil and add in the skins. Once the skins are in, add the ginger and two cinnamon sticks.
The experts added: “The ginger and cinnamon will help speed up your metabolism, promoting calorie burning. Additionally, they will help improve digestion by balancing gastric juices and making it easier to digest fats and carbohydrates.”
Once the mixture has boiled for 15 minutes, strain it into a jug. It’s recommended that you drink two cups of the beverage per day – once in the morning and once at night.
And there’s one other benefit the drink has too. The video explained: “Not only will you reduce water retention, but because it’s a sweet drink, it will also reduce your craving for sweets.”
