Eddie Jordan has warned Lando Norris that he may find himself behind McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri in terms of favour in the coming weeks. The 24-year-old is currenty second in the F1 2024 standings with 199 points after an impressive first half to the season, including a maiden victory at the Miami Grand Prix back in May.
However, while Norris has emerged as the main challenger to Max Verstappen, he hasn’t accrued as many points as some believe he should have. The Englishman has squandered opportunities to win races, including in Spain and Hungary, while his team-mate Piastri has garned plaudits for his driving style given his junior status in the team, having claimed his own maiden victory at the latter track.
Norris clashed with McLaren over the team radio in that race as he appeared set to ignore team orders after gaining the lead following their respective pit-stops. Only after 20 laps did the Brit relent to allow Piastri through for his first F1 win.
Piastri’s impressive form, combined with Norris’s somewhat disappointing recent showings, could see the the Australian become McLaren’s no.1 driver. That is according to former Jordan owner and F1 pundit Eddie Jordan, who believes the British team could have a decision to make after the summer break.
Speaking with legendary racer David Coulthard on the Formula For Success podcast, Jordan said: “They’re going to be fighting each other, they’re going to be fighting for grid position.
“They’re going to be fighting for race results. It’s great for the punters but I’m sure a hell of a ride for the team.” He then shared a stern four-word warning to the headache that McLaren will be facing at the moment, adding: “They are completely confused.”
He continued: “You asked me last week ‘Is Lando number one on that team?’. I said to you ‘without any question, yes’. And I would still say that today if you ask me, but give me a couple of more races and we might have to adjust that.”

Piastri sits 32 points behind Norris in the standings on 167, and with ten races still to go – he could soon eclipse his team-mate completely if their current form keeps up. Since Piastri made his team debut last year, Norris has held the advantage in terms of being McLaren’s No.1 driver.
And while both drivers have achieved their maiden grand prix victories this season – the first team-mates to do so in the same season since Ralf Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya for Williams BMW 23 years ago – there’s now a healthy bout of competition between the two.
Norris was open and candid in an interview during the summer break about his form out on the track, admitting he’s not lived up to his own high standards. Speaking to Sky Sports during Formula One’s summer break, he said: “Reviewing our season so far, it’s been incredible. But from my side, it hasn’t been good enough.
“I’ll do what I can, today, tomorrow… it’s a time when I can review and reflect on my good things, and also the things I need to and have to improve if I want to be a contender. Because at the minute, I don’t have what it takes because I’ve clearly made too many mistakes.”
